Critical Media Literacy Sessions
You'll notice that I have given this session at several different conferences and each time the examples are a little different. If you want to see how I applied Critical Media Studies in ELA and HSS classes, check out the content-specific slidedecks for the California Association of Teachers of English and the California Council for the Social Studies.
The purpose of this presentation is to explore how Critical Media Studies can inform the way teachers show and discuss various types of documents. The Center for Media Literacy developed five key concepts that are based on the idea of social construction. All types of media are constructed - and they must be analyzed as such. Additionally, a critical stance requires that the viewer also take into about the way in which our identities are also socially constructed. These strategies are meant to help students more critically examine their interactions with media and to demonstrate how important it is to shift from being passive recipients to actively engaged thinkers.
