Coming Out of the Closet: Supporting Undocumented & LGBTQ Youth
This presentation focuses on the similarities between the experiences undocumented youth and LGBTQ youth in public education. While they might be treated as separate groups, there are a number of students who would identify as members of both. Educational policy, curriculum, and pedagogy often excludes these two identity categories and therefore does not provide educators with a language to address issues of racism, homophobia, and transphobia within the classroom context. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a vocabulary that addresses terminology that is more inclusive, offer ways of being culturally responsive and becoming allies for our students, and finally to explore those teachable moments where undocumented and LGBTQ youth are included in the narrative rather than excluded.
